Bukalapak is one of Indonesia’s biggest e-commerce marketplaces. It was designed to help businesses of all sizes sell online. From smaller traditional family-owned businesses to medium enterprises, Bukalapak offers sellers an inexpensive and effective way to reach the Indonesian market. 

An Established Platform Faces a New Challenge

To increase customer engagement and traffic to the site, Bukalapak decided to add a live weekly trivia show. Trivia games are popular due to their fun and interactive nature, and by adding prizes like rewards points and vouchers, Bukalapak believed that they could generate a lot of interest, draw more people to the site, and keep visitors on the site longer.

Bukalapak already had a well-designed, highly functional website. However, adding live trivia features required some development work beyond the existing site architecture. They also lacked the backend hardware and expertise to bring the live trivia idea to life. So, to make their vision a reality, Bukalapak turned to the team at BeLive.

Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, we offered two customized solutions made for Bukalapak’s unique situation — A custom live trivia game show that sits right within their website, as well as a live selling feature enabling merchants to sell their products via livestream.

Customization

We created a customized web-based solution that smoothly integrated into Bukalapak’s existing platform. This was especially critical for the e-commerce leader. Since they already had a fully developed website, something that looks and functions like a native part of their existing ecosystem would be ideal in serving a seamless user experience. Live Trivia 

Bukalapak knew that implementing live trivia is much more complex than it looks. Fortunately, we were able to use our existing framework and develop a custom UI/UX to fit with Bukalapak’s branding. Thanks to BeLive’s experience with live trivia, Bukalapak could count on a solution that would work flawlessly right from the start. They also gained access to value-added features such as advanced analytics, including detailed insights into trivia gameplay and user behaviors.

Gamification

Although trivia games are popular, getting the most engagement possible requires a greater knowledge of gamification. Bukalapak was aware of this but needed hands-on guidance from an expert in the field. With our experience in developing live edutainment platforms, which included live trivia apps, we were able to implement the latest gamification strategies, such as custom trivia leaderboards that allow players to advance and rise through the ranks. These techniques keep people playing, and keep them coming back for more.

Web-Based Integration

While Bukalapak’s users see the new live trivia feature as an integrated part of the website, a lot goes on behind the scenes. BeLive’s web-based solution means that users get a smooth, native experience on the website while we handle the backend integration. This arrangement creates an optimal user experience and means less for Bukalapak to worry about. Even with little to no coding knowledge, hosts can use a simple content management system to manage every live stream.

With our help, Bukalapak launched two features: BukaLive and Live Trivia. These two offerings play on the growing fame of Bukalapak’s hosts and their growing legion of fans. 

Firstly, BukaLive gives sellers the chance to host their own live streaming sessions from within the Bukalapak app. This feature allows them to promote new products live to their potential buyers. The seller can also share product links and other information from within the live chat feature. 

Secondly, Live Trivia adds a new, gamified dimension to Bukalapak. The official Bukalapak channel educates audiences about featured products and sellers through live trivia games, in a fun way that viewers embrace. It revolutionizes the traditional one-way street of online “selling”, where products are displayed for sale, and draws active interest from the audience instead by piquing their curiosity and providing entertainment value.

The strategy worked. Already the e-commerce site has engaged 70 million users with live trivia. As Bukalapak continues to grow, their live audiences will as well. And their relationship with us means that it will be simple and easy to add or scale offerings as necessary.
